An inflatable liferaft is a portable life raft that is designed to be inflated after a vessel has sunk or been abandoned. They are typically made from a tough, fabric material and are inflated with compressed air from a carbon dioxide canister. Inflatable liferafts are much more compact than traditional life rafts, which makes them easier to store on board ships and other vessels. They are also much lighter, which makes them easier to deploy in an emergency.
There are two main types of inflatable liferafts:
Throw-over inflatable liferafts: These are small, inflatable rafts that are designed to be thrown overboard from a sinking vessel.
SOLAS inflatable liferafts: These are larger, inflatable rafts that are designed to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations. SOLAS regulations require all commercial vessels to carry a certain number of liferafts that are capable of accommodating all of the people on board the vessel.
Inflatable liferafts are equipped with a number of safety features, including:
A canopy to protect the occupants from the sun and rain
A floor to insulate the occupants from the cold water
Seats for the occupants
Emergency rations and water
A first-aid kit
A survival guide
Signaling devices, such as flares and a sea anchor
Inflatable liferafts are an essential piece of safety equipment for any vessel that operates at sea. They can provide a safe haven for the occupants of a vessel in distress until they can be rescued.
